Events in that tumultuous year prompted The Chronicle's first banner headline, stretching across Page One. "If you want a schedule of where the campus violence will occur this fall," said one student leader in the accompanying article, "just get a copy of the itineraries of the two presidential candidates." Elsewhere on the page, the median salary of faculty members at four-year colleges was reported as $10,235.
