No campus ever had a worse day than Virginia Tech, where on April 16 a student armed with a pair of handguns opened fire in a dormitory and then a classroom building, killing 32 students and faculty members before shooting himself to death. For colleges, the day raised issues of mental-health treatment policies and campus security. For Virginia Tech, the healing would take a long time.
