AAU Membership Moves: a Chronicle Timeline

Boston University has accepted an invitation from the Association of American Universities to become the elite group’s newest member. Membership in the exclusive club is a rare prize that few institutions relinquish willingly—only a handful of universities have departed the group since its founding, in 1900, and some of those moves were fraught with controversy.
