CHIEF EXECUTIVES

Appointments

Chaouki Abdallah, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, was appointed acting president of the University of New Mexico. He is stepping in for Robert Frank, who planned to leave the post at the end of 2016.

Eric Anderson, a professor of history at Pacific Union College and former president of Southwestern Adventist University, will serve as interim president of Pacific Union.

Lynn Babington, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Fairfield University, where she will be interim president for the spring semester, will become president of Chaminade University of Honolulu in August.

Brian Bruess, executive vice president and chief operating officer at St. Catherine University, will become president of St. Norbert College in July. He will succeed Thomas Kunkel, who has led the college since 2008.

Richard Carvajal, interim president of Darton State College, in Albany, Ga., was named president of Valdosta State University. Mr. Carvajal was previously president of Bainbridge State College.

Marjorie Hass will be the first woman to serve as president of Rhodes College, in Memphis. Ms. Hass, current president of Austin College, in Texas, will succeed William Troutt, who plans to retire in June after 18 years at the helm at Rhodes.

Ravi Rajan will be the first Asian-­American president of the California Institute of the Arts. Mr. Rajan, current dean of the School of the Arts at the State University of New York College at Purchase, will take office in June.

G. Gabrielle Starr will become the first female and first African-­American president of Pomona College. Ms. Starr, currently dean of the College of Arts and Science at New York University, will start in July.

Gregory Woodward, president of Carthage College, will become president of the University of Hartford in July. Mr. Woodward will take over from Walter Harrison, who will retire in June after having led Hartford for 19 years.

Resignations

Daniel Eck, president of Lakeland University, plans to resign this month to become deputy director of the Sarasota Museum of Art, in Florida. David Black, a former president of Lakeland, will serve as interim president.

Robert Frank planned to leave his post as president of the University of New Mexico at the end of 2016, five months earlier than he originally intended. His decision to step down followed an investigation into whether he had created a hostile work environment.

Heather Knight planned to resign as president of Pacific Union College on January 8.

Sheila Ruhland has agreed to resign as president of Tacoma Community College on January 13, following a letter of complaint about her leadership from faculty members.

Appointments

Heather Coltman, dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University, to provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at James Madison University.

Catherine Gunther Kodat, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lewis & Clark College, to provost and dean of the faculty at Lawrence University.

Mike McMillan, dean of business and information technology, to interim provost at Pulaski Technical College.

Donde Plowman, dean of the College of Business Administration, to executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Resignations

Michael DeLong, executive vice president and provost at Pulaski Technical College.

Appointments

Charles Hahn was appointed vice president for alumni and development at Millikin University. Mr. Hahn was previously vice president for advancement at Webster University, where he helped to increase external grant funds and raise $1.2 million for a scholarship fund.

Justin Harmon, vice president for communications at Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, to vice president for communications at Barnard College.

Kurtis Lohide, vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer at California State University Maritime Academy, to interim vice president for operations at Central Washington University.

Bryan Ritchie, chief executive of GrowthSPORT, a private-­equity investment company, to vice president and associate provost for innovation at the University of Notre Dame.

Susan Wallace, vice president for finance and operations and chief financial officer at the Erikson Institute, to vice president for finance and administration at Saint Mary’s College of California.

Eric Weldy, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Northern Illinois University, to vice chancellor for student affairs at Indiana University-­Purdue University at Indianapolis.

Tom Rocklin, vice president for student life at the University of Iowa, effective in July.

Anne Balazs, assistant vice president and director of graduate studies, to interim dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University.

Daniel Filler, senior associate dean of academic and faculty affairs, to dean of the Thomas R. Kline School of Law at Drexel University.

David Hess, chair of the neurology department, to interim dean of the Medical College of Georgia and executive vice president for medical affairs and integration at Augusta University.

Mazen Bou Khuzam, assistant professor and chair of the department of mathematics and natural sciences, to dean of faculty at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani.

Elaine Morrato, associate dean of public-health practice, to interim dean of the Colorado School of Public Heath at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Resignations

William Easterling will step down as dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Pennsylvania State University at University Park in May to begin serving as director of the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Geosciences. He will retain a faculty position at Penn State during the four-year appointment.

DEATHS

Susan Christopherson, 69, the first woman to be appointed a full professor in the department of city and regional planning at Cornell University and the first woman to serve as chair of the department, died on December 14.

Kota Inoue, 51, an assistant professor of Japanese at Washington State University, died in a car crash on December 14.

Edwin Burnell Oyer, 89, a professor emeritus in the department of vegetable crops at Cornell University, died on November 15.

Leroy Pelton, 76, a professor emeritus of social work at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, died in December in Henderson, Nev.
