Mysterious Death of Student Heralds a Lawsuit

June 06, 2006

The parents of a freshman at the College of New Jersey who died mysteriously after a night of drinking, and whose body was discovered weeks later in a Pennsylvania landfill, have filed a notice that they plan to sue the college for negligence, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported this morning.

The notice, which said the family would seek $5-million in damages, accused the college of not protecting the student by not enforcing underage-drinking laws and not providing campus security. The college said it was working with the police to figure out what happened. Investigators are trying to determine if the student accidentally fell or was pushed down his dormitory’s garbage chute, or in some other way ended up in the trash-compacting bin at the foot of the chute.
