NCAA Asks Division III Members for Feedback on Possible 'Fourth Division'

February 07, 2008

The National Collegiate Athletic Association sent a survey today to the 440 institutions that make up Division III, asking for opinions on how to handle the group’s swelling numbers.

Talk of a possible “fourth division” was all the buzz at the NCAA’s convention last month in Nashville, where members had heated debates on the pros and cons of such a split.

Division III is expected to reach 480 members by 2020, and NCAA leaders have suggested that, to accommodate the growth, Division III will need to subdivide or spawn a new division altogether.

The survey, which is due back to the NCAA at the end of the month, seeks input from athletics administrators, admissions and financial-aid officers, and, of course, college presidents. —Libby Sander
