The Chronicle Review

Offensive Ad Serves No Useful Purpose

August 11, 2014

To the Editor:

The July 4 issue of The Chronicle Review contained an advertisement for a self-published book on schizophrenia. The advertisement consisted of a lengthy quotation contending that paranoid schizophrenia is caused by unconscious wishes to perform homosexual activities. This is an offensive statement to read, supporting as it does the now long-discredited theory that homosexuality is a mental illness. There is no scientifically credible evidence that schizophrenia and sexual orientation are etiologically related, and placing such statements before the readers of this periodical serves no useful function. It also perpetuates harmful and inaccurate stereotypes which have no place in an academic periodical.
