Susan Desmond-Hellmann, chancellor of the University of California at San Francisco, will join the board of directors of Facebook, becoming only the second woman to do so. Before becoming chancellor, she was president for product development at the biotechnology company Genentech.


Vistasp M. Karbhari, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, will become president of the University of Texas at Arlington on June 1. He will succeed James D. Spaniolo, who is stepping down May 31 after having been president since 2004.

Faye Gilbert, dean of the College of Business and Economics at Radford University, in Virginia, will become dean of the College of Business at the University of Southern Mississippi on July 1. She will be the first woman to lead that college.

Daniel A. Wubah, vice president of undergraduate education and deputy provost at Virginia Tech, will become provost of Washington and Lee University on July 1, as well as a professor of biology there.

Nathaniel A. Persily, a professor of law and political science at Columbia Law School and an expert on election law and public opinion, will become a professor of law at Stanford University next summer.


Carl Oxholm III has left the presidency of Arcadia University after serving less than two years. He was terminated, without explanation, by the university's Board of Trustees. Nicolette DeVille Christensen, the university's vice president, was named chief operating officer. She has assumed the president's duties as part of that role.
