Facing a growing number of jobless recent graduates, the Chinese Ministry of Education has announced plans to phase out or downsize majors whose graduates have an employment rate that falls below 60 percent for two consecutive years. The proposal, contained in an official notice to universities and local governments, comes as the number of China’s university-educated citizens has jumped to 8,930 people per 100,000 in 2010, up nearly 150 percent from 2000, according to China’s 2010 Census.
