U. of Tokyo Panel Urges Fall Start for Academic Year

An internal panel at Japan’s top university has recommended shifting the start of its academic year to the fall, a move that if approved would probably recalibrate the country’s entire academic calendar. The University of Tokyo said it hoped the panel’s report would generate lively discussion in Japan, where academic enrollment now starts in April, putting the nation’s higher-education system out of sync with the rest of the world. The panel’s report, which will be officially released Friday, is expected to generate internal opposition, reports The Mainichi Daily News. If approved, the plan would almost certainly force other universities to follow suit.
