AAUP Will Investigate U. of Northern Iowa Over Faculty Cuts

The American Association of University Professors announced on Friday that it would investigate the University of Northern Iowa over allegations that the faculty there had been denied meaningful involvement in the planning of program cuts and that academic positions were being eliminated without due process for those affected. In a letter to the university’s president, Benjamin J. Allen, the AAUP said it also was concerned that tenured faculty members were having to waive certain rights in order to accept buyout packages to which they should be entitled without strings attached. The university has defended its program-cutting plan as necessary given its tight budget.
