Advocacy Groups Sue Education Dept. for Information on Debt Collection

In a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education filed on Wednesday, the National Consumer Law Center, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the ACLU of Massachusetts demanded access to information on student-loan debt collection and its racial impact.

The groups requested the information last May through the Freedom of Information Act. They sought information about departmental policies so that they can assess the effect of debt-collection practices in terms of race.

“The public has a right to know how a taxpayer-funded agency handles debt collection to ensure it is done in a fair and nondiscriminatory way,” Rachel Goodman, attorney with the ACLU, said in a news release on Wednesday.
