Boston U. and Wheelock College Explore Potential Merger

Boston University and Wheelock College, a private institution one mile away from the university’s Charles River campus, will begin formal merger discussions, according to a joint statement from the institutions on Tuesday.

The discussions are the result of a strategic-planning effort at Wheelock College that aimed to “ensure the mission of the college remains sustainable.”

In the coming weeks, the institutions plan to examine what the merged academic units and services would look like, the joint statement said: “We believe the merger will enhance Boston University’s programs, as well as preserve the mission of Wheelock College to improve the lives of children and families.”

The institutions did not offer any further specifics about the potential merger, but a spokesman for Boston University said details would be released over the coming months as the discussions progress.
