Canadian Faculty Group Urges Colleges to Cut Ties With Confucius Institutes

The Canadian Association of University Teachers has urged colleges and universities to cut ties with Confucius Institutes, campus centers supported by the Chinese government that focus on teaching Chinese language and culture. The Canadian faculty group raised concerns, similar to the worries expressed by critics on some American campuses, that the Chinese government’s involvement in the institutes infringes on free speech. Others, however, have argued that the institutes are valuable venues for teaching students about China.
