College Degree Is Key to Good Job and Prosperity, Survey Finds

Americans overwhelmingly view a college degree as essential to getting a good job and achieving financial security, according to the results of a Gallup survey released today by the Lumina Foundation for Education. The survey, which echoes the results of a similar public-opinion poll conducted last spring by the Pew Research Center, found that despite the faltering economy and tenacious unemployment, more than half of respondents said people with a degree have a good chance of finding a “quality job” and 95 percent said a degree is very or somewhat important to being financially secure. The survey, drawn from telephone interviews with a nationally representative sampling of about 1,000 Americans age 18 and older, has a margin of error of four percentage points.
