Duquesne U. Seeks Religious Exemption From NLRB Jurisdiction

Duquesne University has filed a motion with the National Labor Relations Board that seeks a religious exemption to the agency’s jurisdiction over its campus-labor affairs, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The motion seeks to withdraw the university from an earlier agreement to allow the NLRB to oversee a mail-ballot election for adjunct faculty who want to form a union affiliated with the United Steelworkers. In March the steelworkers’ union said the adjuncts hoped to organize a collective-bargaining unit to push for better pay, working conditions, and job security. The university’s motion came a week before the election was to begin, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The university said other Roman Catholic universities had filed similar challenges, some of which are under review.
