Elsevier Fires Journal Editor Over Paper Saying HIV Doesn’t Cause AIDS

Elsevier, the journal-publishing giant, will not renew the contract of one of its journal’s editors after the journal, which is not peer-reviewed, published a paper last summer saying that HIV does not cause AIDS, Science magazine reports. Elsevier told the editor of Medical Hypotheses, Bruce G. Charlton, on Monday that it would not renew his contract, set to expire at the end of this year, according to the magazine. Elsevier has also asked Mr. Charlton to put a peer-review system in place immediately or resign. Mr. Charlton, who teaches evolutionary psychology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and theoretical medicine at the University of Buckingham, reportedly says he will neither resign nor adopt new editorial policies.
