Facebook Remarks Cost Willamette U. Fraternity Its House

Willamette University will evict members of the Sigma Chi fraternity from their campus house and prohibit the group from recruiting new members for violating the university’s student code of conduct, the Statesman Journal, in Salem, Ore., reported. The moves follow the May appearance online of images of pages from the fraternity’s private Facebook group. The pages included insulting references to female students and faculty members, as well as mentions of hazings and secret on-campus parties.

David Douglas, the university’s dean of campus life, said in a statement posted on the university’s Web site that the fraternity’s national organization had worked closely with Willamette to respond to the revelations. He also said the chapter ”must transform its leadership and develop educational and advising programs” and “must participate in programming endorsed by the university and related to healthy masculinity.”
