After Year of Discord, Kean U. Wins Reaccreditation

The decision by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Higher Education puts to rest one challenge facing the New Jersey institution, where faculty members have clashed frequently with the president, Dawood Y. Farahi. In July, Mr. Farahi lashed out at the commission when it placed the university on probation, saying that it had violated its own policies in a staff-driven campaign to punish the institution. The commission later raised questions about Kean’s new campus in China.

The crisis lead to calls for Farahi’s dismissal as students and parents questioned whether the school would lose its accreditation, a step that usually leads to a college shutting down. But Kean hired a team of consultants and made changes, including a new academic intergrity policy and new systems to monitor how the university is performing and whether students are learning what they are supposed to in class. Farahi also backed off his criticism of the accrediting agency.
