Another College Reports Racially Tinged Disturbance After Obama’s Win

The incident took place at Hampden-Sydney College, a private institution in Virginia that is one of the few remaining all-male colleges in the United States. Christopher B. Howard, the college’s president, wrote in a letter to parents that a group of students shouted racial epithets and threw bottles outside the college’s minority-student union early Wednesday morning in response to the election results. The incident also included threats of physical violence. Mr. Howard, the college’s first African-American president, wrote that he was “terribly disappointed with the students who participated in this harmful, senseless episode including those men who stood idly by and watched it happen.” In a similar incident at the University of Mississippi, two people were arrested.

Howard said nearly 300 members of the campus community gathered at a “town hall” meeting Wednesday night to discuss what happened.
“I was moved by the responses of our students, their condemnation of the incident, and their heartfelt appeals to brotherhood,” Howard said.
