Christian College’s President Seeks Exemption From Ban on Anti-Gay Bias

The president of a Christian college in Massachusetts is defending his decision to sign a letter requesting a religious exemption to a forthcoming federal ban on anti-gay discrimination by federal contractors.

D. Michael Lindsay, president of Gordon College, wrote in a statement that his signature “was in keeping with our decades-old tradition that, as an explicitly Christian institution, Gordon should set the conduct expectations for members of our community.”

Mr. Lindsay joined 13 other religious leaders in signing the letter, which argued that an exemption was necessary to avoid “an unreasonable cost to the common good, national unity, and religious freedom.”

The president of Gordon College is defending his support for a religious exemption to federal regulations banning antigay discrimination, saying his “sole intention” was to affirm the Christian school’s support for religious liberty.
