European Scientist Recruited to U. of Alberta Abandons $10-Million Grant

The researcher, Patrik Rorsman, walked away from a $10-million grant he had received as part of a lucrative Canadian program designed to lure researchers and their labs to Canadian universities. He returned to England after just seven months at the University of Alberta. The executive director of the program said officials never expected the grant recipients to be completely happy with their moves.

Rorsman’s departure underscores why the government’s bid “to bag big game” is a “very bad investment for Canada,” says James Turk, executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers and a critic of the research-chair program.
