Faculty at Sweet Briar Votes to Oppose Closing the College

Faculty members at Sweet Briar College voted on Monday night to oppose shuttering the college, two weeks after the administration announced it would close its doors because of “financial challenges.” The Roanoke Times reports that about 65 faculty members passed a resolution that also calls for an audience with the Virginia college’s Board of Directors. The college has about 80 full-time faculty members.

Students and alumni have mounted a fund-raising effort to keep the college open, and also plan to contest the college’s closure on legal grounds.

Nearly two weeks after the leadership of Sweet Briar College announced the school’s closing, the faculty broke a rule in its bylaws to call a special meeting and pass a resolution opposing the shutdown of the women’s college and asking for a discussion with the school’s board.
