Florida Southern College’s Feral Cats Will Get Their Own Dormitories

The college, known for its unparalleled collection of buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, also is home to almost 100 stray cats. Other campuses, faced with the same problem, have taken different approaches, some of them controversial. The solution at Florida Southern is to build six shelters for the felines using designs inspired by the Wright structures around them. Each shelter, about 5 feet by 3 feet, will contain food and water, and will be managed by a sorority and the local SPCA. The question is whether the cats will appreciate the shelters’ world-class design—or just the comforts to be found within them. The felines could not be reached for comment. Most seemed to be napping.

It would be incorrect to call them cat houses, college officials say. The preferred terminology is cat cafe, a place where the wayward felines can kick back for a drink and some chow.
