Former U. of Northern Iowa Student’s Sex-Assault Case Is Settled for $50,000

The former student filed a 2007 lawsuit asserting University of Northern Iowa administrators treated her poorly after she reported being sexually assaulted by two football players when she was a freshman. She’ll receive $50,000 to drop the lawsuit, according to the terms of a settlement, approved by a state panel, that was released on Tuesday. University officials did not admit any wrongdoing in the settlement.

Leah Gutknecht, an assistant to UNI President Ben Allen, said Tuesday that the university has taken several steps in response. The school soon plans to unveil a program that will allow victims to report assaults to university officials online and has named a new investigative team for handling complaints, she said.
