Mass. Officials Investigate Sudden Closures of For-Profit Campuses

The office of Attorney General Martha M. Coakley of Massachusetts is investigating the abrupt closures this week of five for-profit campuses of the American Career Institute. The college had three other locations in Maryland that also closed suddenly.

Last week five other for-profit campuses owned by a Rhode Island corporation were stripped of their accreditation after shutting down in a similar manner. The FBI is now involved in an inquiry regarding those closures.

“Our office is working to protect students who find themselves in this circumstance with seemingly no advance warning,” Coakley said.

“We urge students to contact our office if they were harmed by this closure.”

Citing financial difficulty, the school shut down Wednesday in Massachusetts and Maryland, where it had three campuses.
