Northern Illinois U. Police Dept. Faces Probe Over Handling of Evidence

The department has been accused of hiding evidence that could have cleared one of its officers of charges that he sexually assaulted a student in 2011. The officer, Andrew Rifkin, was fired. His lawyers are now seeking dismissal of the charges.

On Monday, DeKalb State’s Attorney Clay Campbell requested the probe into the department and Police Chief Don Grady after a judge found the NIU police department withheld evidence from his office. The information “arguably exonerates” Rifkin of the charges, he said.
