Oberlin Group Cancels Concert by ‘Viet Cong,’ Citing ‘Ignorant’ Name

A student group at Oberlin College has canceled a performance by the Canadian band Viet Cong, citing its “grossly ignorant and deeply offensive” name. A member of the Student Union Programming Committee, Ivan Krasnov, said in an apology letter that he regretted “inviting a band with a name that deeply offends and hurts Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American communities, both in Oberlin and beyond.” The band had been slated to perform on the Ohio campus on March 14.

Viet Cong were set to perform at the Oberlin College venue Dionysus Disco on March 14. However, the promoter has canceled the show because of the band’s name. In a statement shared on the venue’s Facebook page, promoter Ivan Krasnov apologized “for inviting a band with a name that deeply offends and hurts Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American communities, both in Oberlin and beyond.”
