Police Officer Convicted of Beating U. of Md. Student Gets Home Detention

James Harrison Jr. was convicted in October of second-degree assault in connection with the filmed beating of a University of Maryland at College Park student during a basketball postgame celebration in 2010. Prosecutors had requested a six-month prison sentence, but a judge on Friday sentenced him to 30 days of home detention. Another officer had faced similar charges, but only Officer Harrison was convicted.

Judge Beverly J. Woodard also ordered Harrison to undergo 18 months of unsupervised probation after he is released from home detention.
