College in Texas Accidentally Panics Students With Shooter Drill

Campus police officers at North Lake College, a two-year institution in Irving, Tex., planned a drill involving a simulated shooting last week. But the college sent little notice to faculty and staff members, causing students to panic when they heard police officers mimicking gunfire.

“Clearly our notification process has to be better,” said Christa Slejko, president of the school, part of the Dallas County Community College District.

The school had sent out two emails warning faculty and staff about the drill but had not notified students. Slejko said students were left in the dark because classes usually aren’t held on Fridays.
