U. of Florida Professor Is Arrested in United Arab Emirates

A University of Florida professor has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates for taking photographs of buildings in the capital city of Abu Dhabi, The Gainesville Sun reports. John Schueller, an engineering professor, was detained last week and released on bail.

“I have legal representation, and things are moving forward,” Mr. Schueller said in an email to the Sun.

The university said it knew of the professor’s detention. “We are aware that the matter is under review, and the university has made sure that Dr. Schueller … has assistance of counsel in Abu Dhabi,” said Janine Sikes, the university’s assistant vice president for media relations.

Earlier this week, a professor at New York University, Andrew Ross, was denied entry to the emirates, where NYU has a branch campus. Mr. Ross has been an outspoken critic of the treatment of migrant laborers who built the campus.

A longtime University of Florida engineering professor is being held in Abu Dhabi by the United Arab Emirates pending the resolution of his legal status. John Schueller, a mechanical engineering professor in the Center for Manufacturing Innovation of the College of Engineering at UF, was arrested last week and released on bail.
