U. of Pennsylvania Law Dean Will Be Tulane U.’s Next President

Tulane University on Tuesday named Michael A. Fitts, dean of the University of Pennsylvania’s law school, to be its next president. Mr. Fitts will succeed Scott S. Cowen, who announced last year that he would step down in June after a 16-year tenure in which he steered the university through the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent recovery of New Orleans. Mr. Fitts will take office on July 1.

Fitts, 60, has been Penn’s law dean since 2000 and a member of the law school’s faculty since 1985. Before going into academia, he worked in the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, and he was a clerk for federal Appeals Judge A. Leon Higginbotham.

He holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard College and a law degree from Yale University.
