U. of Texas Regents Balk at Giving Documents to Legislators

The University of Texas system’s Board of Regents asked the state’s attorney general on Friday whether the Legislature could compel the board to turn over documents related to the regents’ lengthy, high-profile investigation of the system’s flagship campus in Austin. The board’s chairman, Gene Powell, complained that legislators’ demands for documents collected by the regents were “potentially damaging to the ability of the system’s governing board to fulfill properly its statutory and fiduciary duties.” Legislators, however, called the board’s move shocking.

These are people who went on a huge document-mining expedition in the name of transparency and now wish to withhold documents from a legislative committee. Who do these guys think they are?”
