Utah Valley U. Paints ‘Texting’ Lane on Busy Staircase

This is just the world we live in, and Utah Valley University is ahead of the curve.

The Orem campus has divided a staircase leading to its Student and Wellness Center into three lanes: one for walking, one for running, and one for texting. The central motivation, reports the website Fusion, wasn’t to prevent collisions (though it might). It was to comment on the habit, especially among students, of texting while walking.

“It’s meant to be there for people to look at and enjoy,” Matt Bambrough, the university’s creative director, told Fusion.


There’s a “culture of walking and texting” on the Utah Valley University campus, according to conversations with students, but that’s not the main reason Matt Bambrough, the creative director at UVU, came up with an idea to paint a “texting lane” on a staircase leading up to the brand-new Student and Wellness Center.
