Oregon University System Gets Some Freedom From State

As the share of state tax support for public higher education has shrunk, universities across the country have been lobbying for less oversight from state regulations. The Oregon University System has become one of a growing number to persuade lawmakers to cede some control over how the colleges collect and spend their money. Gov. John Kitzhaber, a Democrat, signed today legislation that achieves that goal by changing the system from a state agency to a public system.
