Police Chase of Stolen Vehicle Ends With Driver Shot Dead on Iowa State Campus

Iowa State University students took cover on Monday morning as officers with the Ames, Iowa, police department chased a stolen truck onto the campus and fired shots into the vehicle after the driver ignored their commands, The Des Moines Register reported. The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two students told the newspaper that the suspect had been ramming an officer’s vehicle trying to get out of a stand of trees he had crashed into. The students were approaching to see what was going on as other squad cars arrived. When an officer fired into the truck, they ducked for cover.

The suspect was not identified. The chase had begun on a city street sometime after 10 a.m. after officers tried to stop the truck, Cmdr. Geoff Huff of the Ames Police Department said. University police officers became involved in the chase when the truck made its way onto the campus. No students were harmed in the incident.
