Student Pleads Guilty to Nonfatal Shooting at Northern Virginia Community College

A former student accused of firing two rifle shots at his mathematics professor at Northern Virginia Community College in 2009 pleaded guilty this morning to attempted murder, the Associated Press reports. No one was injured in the incident, which apparently stemmed from the student’s anger over his grade. The gunman, Jason M. Hamilton, has serious mental-health problems, his lawyer said today, according to the AP. The lawyer, Juan Estevez, asked the judge to take that into account in issuing a sentence, which could range from two to 20 years.
