U. of Oregon Agrees to Creation of Mixed Faculty Union

The University of Oregon’s administration has dropped its resistance to the formation of a faculty union representing a wide range of instructors, including tenure-track faculty, adjuncts, and research associates. The administration and union organizers agreed this week to move ahead with certification of the new collective-bargaining unit, which will be affiliated with the American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers, according to statements posted online by the union and the AAUP. The university’s provost, Lorraine Davis, told The Register-Guard, in Eugene, that the administration does not believe that having a single collective-bargaining unit for different types of faculty is the best course, but that it had decided to drop its objections to such a mixed unit in deference to the organizers’ wishes.
