U.S. Tightens Reins on Research That Could Be Used by Terrorists

The federal government today gave all its agencies two months to review biology research they finance that could pose a threat to public health if it fell into the wrong hands. Any projects, the policy says, should be assessed for risks and benefits, and a plan put in place to mitigate risks. The directive comes as a federal advisory panel is meeting this week to review a controversial recommendation to partly censor two papers because they showed how the bird-flu virus could be more easily transmitted among mammals.
