Veterans Affairs Dept. Still Struggles With GI Benefit Program, Report Says

Although the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has worked to improve its management of the Post-9/11 GI Bill Program, which provides benefits to veterans pursuing postsecondary education, the department still faces challenges in claims processing and staff retention, according to a report released today by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. The department has also struggled to provide comprehensive and consistent guidance to the students and institutions it serves, according to the report, and although the department has improved the timeliness of claims processing since previous reports, delays have remained during peak processing times. The GAO recommended that the department collaborate with the Education Department to improve its processes for administering aid, and to revamp other practices, such as the process for returning overpayments.
