Yale to Pay $3 Million to Settle Lawsuit Over Murder of Student in Lab

Yale University will pay $3 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a graduate student who was murdered in a campus research lab in 2009, the Associated Press reports.

The student, Annie Le, was murdered by a research technician who worked in the same building less than a week before her planned wedding. Ms. Le’s family argued that Yale had not done enough to ensure women’s safety on the campus and that the man who murdered her had shown a “violent propensity towards women” in the past.

Yale denied any knowledge that Raymond Clark III, who pleaded guilty to murder and is serving a 44-year prison sentence, was dangerous and contended that extra security would not have prevented the tragedy because the building was already accessible only by keycard.
