The Internet has ushered in a new era for switchboard operators at Northern Illinois University: Instead of simply redirecting calls, the operators are now fielding questions on local businesses and scheduled events, and answering those queries with the help of an internal Web site. The University of Texas at El Paso has unveiled a new fiber-optic link that connects it to Internet2’s high-speed research network and Mexico’s Internet2 equivalent. It’s the first link between American and Mexican computers owned by a university, according to campus officials.
