While more and more institutions may open all sorts of eating or coffee drinking establishments in the library building, I question how effective such a move will be toward attracting students. The serious students will need no such enticement, as libraries have traditionally been a refuge for quiet contemplation and study. Perhaps it's old-fashioned nostalgia on my part, but I fear we may lose the peace and solitude that exists in university libraries. After all, the library may be the one place on campus where a student can go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the trendy hangouts on campus. Call me a traditionalist, but I say leave the library as it is, and let Starbucks open a franchise in the Student Union.
