Age is a poor measure of faculty supply because:
1. Our population is aging, an aging professoriate results partly from this demographic.
2. Widespread use of adjuncts has greatly reduced the need for professional faculty. Technology may further reduce the need or faculty by enabling fewer institutions to matriculate more students.
The only shortage that is certain to result from this statistic is the one that will appear on paper as a pretext to get funds to establish programs that we don't know we need.
