The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

In my opinion, age of professors shouldn't be a great concern as long as professors continue to maintain some kind of professional connection to the subject and industries to which their subject areas apply. For example, as a corporate communications professional and college instructor (not full-time, though that's my goal), I've worked hard to impart information that is both interesting AND practical to my students in their pursuit of a degree AND career outside of school. The point is this: When professors begin to lose touch with industry and the connection their subjects play in those industries, they should retire. It's of no service to a student if he/she cannot be taught valuable information that's being used TODAY in their chosen career path. Otherwise, what's the point for attending college?
