The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

The very question you pose is outrageous! It's based on the notion that jobs, who has them, and what is the their age-range, is what education is all about. Excuse me? I thought that teaching effectiveness and contributions to knowledge counted more than age. In 1993, the California State University System offered an inducement for those in the upper pay range to take an early retirement. More than 100 senior professors took the bait at San Francisco State University, and the school hasn't yet recovered from the loss. I am saddened to think that anyone would put age before performance and competency.
