Two observations: 1) Genetics has a lot to do with how physically vigorous and mentally alert a person over 60 is. If professors believe that they still have a lot of "tread left on their tires," they should be able to continue to work and transmit their experience and knowledge to their students. Conversely, those whose genes have begun to "wear out" and whose "tires are worn out and deflated," should be wise enough to retire. 2) My second observation goes to what each state legislature must do to provide the appropriate incentive to induce a professor to retire at a relatively early age, or, at least, earlier than otherwise contemplated.
