The tenure question has furthered the part-time dilemma abuse now found at most colleges. Tenure is necessary. Retirement is at least a book-length problem. Thirty-year old notes need updating or at least an acknowledgment of the transitions in literary criticism. If one does not gain tenure, a college can merely throw you away.
Yet tenure like academic freedom is not a license for abuse.
