Does anyone ever admit to being a bad teacher?

(1/16) > >>

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that s/h/it was a bad teacher. But some people really are.

Mostly I've heard blaming the students for lack of interest, laziness, whatever.

What think you?

Does anyone ever fess up?

The Fiona, always a spectacular teacher of course

I had a professor in grad school who once told me "I don't like teaching, I'm not good at it, and I avoid it at all cost".

Of course, he bought out of courses as often as he could and ended up basically (though not officially) co-teaching one course a year.

Yes, there are researchers who say they don't like teaching.

But what about people who are just boring personalities, who drone in class (just the way they drone papers at conferences)?

Do they ever admit they're bad? Can they be saved?

The Fiona

Well, I bored the living daylights out of my class yesterday, despite the fact that the underlying topic is pretty interesting. Odds are, in my second semester of real teaching, I'm a pretty bad teacher. But I don't feel like a bad teacher on a day to day basis.

I feel like a bad teacher today.  But I hope to redeem myself next week.
