Rats, I had rather hoped that threat on Cuban state television was real. I wouldn't mind knowing more about that topic...

Yeah, we see all the Korean spam today, but the bot is up to 150 posts now (edit: I didn't realize there were 2 bots -- total of 310 spam posts at present) and rather than race against a bot and click on 150 310 individual spam posts I think I'm just hoping for a staff mod to come in and batch-delete the whole mess.

Fortunately, it's choosing a lesser-used portion of the site, so if you just avoid Questions/Comments you should be alright.

No spam this morning! I don't know whether the spammers took a night off (unlikely) or whether the mods instituted some restriction on registration and spamming and so on, or whether someone just had insomnia and zapped them in real time, but it was a real pleasure not to have to sift through to real new posts! Good job, whoever was responsible!

Today's spam is the worst I have ever seen. It's got to the point where I am wondering whether prospective new members should not have to go through some kind of screening process.

Precisely. I hate to suggest it, but a confirmed academic email?

Or even some basic CAPCHA process. There are ways to minimize spam posts. Perhaps I misunderstand, but the choice of forum software leaves this community vulnerable. It does not have the modern security features to keep the garbage out.

Not sure if this is related at all, but I previously registered with the Chronicle in grad school (.edu address where I'm logged in now). Now I work for a small company that buys its employees a site license. When I am logged in under that account (with an auto-generated username), I cannot even READ the forums.  I get a message that I am a spammer... but I've never posted anything under that moniker.  Anybody else encountered something similar?
